Brazil emphasizes dialogue but rejects mediation role in Ukraine

Brazil’s Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, has clarified that the country does not aim to act as a mediator in the Ukraine situation but supports a peaceful, negotiated resolution between Ukraine and Russia.

This was communicated during a local media interview where Vieira reinforced the need for peace talks, a stance emphasized by President Lula, but mentioned it was not a sole country’s responsibility.

Vieira stated that Brazil’s objective of promoting dialogue has been effective, as evidenced by recent peace negotiation efforts involving leaders from various African countries, Pope Francis, and President Lula himself.

He also mentioned having engaged with nearly 60 foreign ministers, discussing the tensions in Eastern Europe and Brazil’s viewpoint on the matter.

This perspective, he claimed, was generally well received globally, even by countries directly involved in the conflict.

Despite occasional criticisms in the media, Vieira stated that Brazil’s contribution to steering the conversation towards peace remains significant.

He also noted that President Lula has been in telephonic contact with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
