33 killed in Brazilian police operation against organized crime; authorities investigate

In the last five days, police operations in Brazil have resulted in at least 33 deaths.

The incidents occurred in the states of Bahía and São Paulo and will be investigated by the authorities.

The police state criminal gangs attacked them during their actions against organized crime.

In São Paulo, the operation followed the murder of a police officer, leading to armed conflicts and resulting in at least 14 deaths in the Bajada Santista region near the port of Santos.

In Bahía, 19 deaths occurred during police operations in three different cities.

The military police of the region initiated these actions last Friday, aimed at combating drug trafficking and organized crime.

The São Paulo governor, Tarcísio de Freitas, commented on the incidents, stating his displeasure at the confrontations but affirming that despite the difficulties in fighting the gangs, they “will not submit to criminality.”

The operation in Bajada Santista is seen as a response to the homicide of a police officer in Guarujá and is noted to be the action with the highest death toll since an incident in 2006, when 108 people died.

The operations are scheduled to continue until August 28th.
