Brazil Launches $2 Billion Fund to Reduce Carbon Emissions

Brazil just launched a groundbreaking effort, with the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) spearheading a new Climate Fund.

As the bank announced, this initiative will channel up to 10.4 billion reais ($2.09 billion) into reducing carbon emissions, believed to combat climate change.

BNDES shared in a statement that it would back projects across six essential domains:

  • resilient and sustainable urban growth;
  • the advancement of green industries;
  • enhancement of green logistics, public transport, and mobility;
  • progression in energy transition;
  • conservation of native forests and water bodies, and
  • promotion of green services along with innovation.

Interest rates for these projects will start at 1% annually for forest and water conservation initiatives, reaching up to 8% annually for energy shift endeavors, including a BNDES bonus.

The fund’s capital includes $2 billion sourced from international markets via sustainable sovereign bonds by the Ministry of Finance.

These bonds target the support of environmental care, climate change counteraction, and conservation activities.

Nelson Barbosa, Director at BNDES, emphasized the Climate Fund’s role. He noted it unites vital government actions in urban mobility.

It also focuses on promoting greener industrial methods. Additionally, the fund supports forest restoration efforts.

Investment in renewable energy is another key area. All initiatives align with the Ecological Transition Plan. This plan aims to make a sustainable impact across various sectors.

The fund’s allocation far surpasses past contributions. For comparison, in 2023, the National Climate Change Fund allocated 733.2 million reais ($147 million) towards similar goals.

Offsetting 4.3 million tons of CO2 emissions

The bank supported 27 projects in the preceding year, with an extra 1 billion reais ($200 million) sourced from other BNDES allocations.

Most funds went to renewable energy (13 projects) and energy-efficient tools (10 projects). Additionally, investments covered urban mobility, charcoal production, and sustainable city projects.

These investments are projected to offset 4.3 million tons of CO2 emissions. This impact mirrors ten months’ worth of vehicle emissions in São Paulo’s metropolitan area, BNDES noted.

Founded in 2009, under the Ministry of Environment’s umbrella, the Climate Fund receives management from BNDES, marking a pivotal step in Brazil’s climate action strategy.
