RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Brazil has confirmed another 461 deaths from complications caused by the novel coronavirus. Consequently, the country has reached the mark of 153,675 deaths caused by Covid-19 since the first case of the disease was registered in the country in late February this year.

The figures are included in the Ministry of Health’s daily update released October 17th. The report reflects the data recorded over a period of 24 hours by the state Health Secretariats.
According to the portfolio, another 24,062 positive diagnoses were registered in the period, raising the total of confirmed cases of the disease across the country to 5,224,362. The Brazilian population exceeds 210.1 million inhabitants – which means that the presence of the virus has been confirmed in less than three percent of the population.
Among the already confirmed cases, 4,635,315 patients are counted as having recovered from the disease, 88.7 percent of the total number of people whose tests confirmed infection with the novel coronavirus. Another 435,372 patients are still under treatment.
Covid-19 in the states
In absolute terms, the states with the highest death toll are São Paulo (37,992, for 1,062,634 cases); Rio de Janeiro (19,715, for 289,569 cases), Ceará (9,207 for 264,245 cases), Pernambuco (8,480 for 155,923 cases), and Minas Gerais (8,405, for 333,998 cases).
The states with fewest deaths are Acre (679), Roraima (681), Amapá (731), Tocantins (1,042), and Rondônia (1,421).
