After Hondurans voted on November 30, the National Electoral Council (CNE) took weeks to certify results. On December 24, it proclaimed Nasry “Tito” Asfura president-elect for the 2026–2030 term, ending a count that had already strained public trust.

The margin was hairline. With more than 99% of ballots counted, Asfura finished first with 40.27%. Nasralla, the Liberal Party candidate, followed with 39.53%. Rixi Moncada, the governing party’s candidate, received 706,266 votes (19.19%).

The gap between the top two was roughly 27,000 votes. That closeness turned technical problems into a legitimacy fight. Authorities acknowledged failures in the results system and inconsistencies that pushed about 15% of ballots into manual counting.

Protests disrupted parts of that review. Nasralla rejected the outcome and alleged missing ballots. Moncada also alleged irregularities.

The final certification was validated by two electoral council members while a third was absent, fueling claims the process was rushed. Outside Honduras, the priority became containment.

Asfura Victory Signals Diplomatic Shifts for Honduras

Eight governments—Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and the Dominican Republic—issued a joint statement recognizing Asfura and urging a peaceful, orderly transition, with cooperation on trade, security, and migration.

The United States also recognized the result and urged respect for it. The story behind the story is alignment. Trump publicly endorsed Asfura, and the intervention drew criticism in Honduras.

Trump’s rhetoric included threats to cut aid and references to a jailed former Honduran president. Asfura ran on jobs and tougher security, but the biggest regional signal is diplomatic: he has suggested restoring ties with Taiwan, reversing Honduras’ 2023 switch to recognize China.

Honduras joined Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Nicaragua in recognizing Beijing, while Guatemala and Belize still recognize Taipei.

Asfura is set to take office on January 27, 2026. The next test is whether Honduras can move from counting votes to governing before geopolitics becomes the next flashpoint.
