Yet the same days flood Seoul and Jakarta with football stars and festival crowds, a reminder that consumer confidence runs hot even as the geopolitical weather darkens.

Taiwan – Typhoon Dolphin Bearing Down

Watchful and weather-tense

Taiwan is on alert as Typhoon Dolphin, the 13th named storm of the season, weakens from a super typhoon but remains a severe threat tracking west-northwest toward the Ryukyu Islands.

The Central Weather Administration says it could issue a sea warning as early as Friday 7 August, with forecast models pointing to a possible landfall on the Chinese mainland between southern Zhejiang and northern Fujian around 6-8 August.

Philippines – A Fresh Maritime Flashpoint at Scarborough Shoal

Defiant under pressure

China surged an amphibious naval group and at least two H-6K bombers to Scarborough Shoal over the 1-2 August weekend, holding drills about 120 nautical miles off Luzon in what is now the region’s most active maritime crisis.

Beijing framed the show of force as a direct response to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s government depositing a nautical chart of the shoal with the United Nations under the Law of the Sea convention, a legal move that has sharply raised tensions.

Consumer confidence runs hot even as the geopolitical weather darkens.

China – Factory Activity Slips Back into Contraction

Assertive abroad, uneasy at home

China’s official manufacturing purchasing managers’ index fell to 49.2 in July, down from 50.3 in June and slipping below the 50-point line that separates growth from contraction for the first time since February.

Output, new orders and export orders all turned negative, weighed down by weak demand and typhoon disruption, keeping the region’s dominant worry of US-China trade friction firmly in focus after a new 12.5% American tariff took effect on 24 July.

South Korea – Europe’s Football Elite Arrive in Seoul

Buoyant but divided beneath

Manchester City, fresh from winning the 2025-26 FA Cup and Carabao Cup, headline the fifth Coupang Play Series with matches against a Team K League selection on 5 August and Atletico Madrid on 9 August at Seoul World Cup Stadium.

The event is a barometer of Korea’s premium sports-entertainment spending and inbound tourism, arriving at a time when President Lee Jae-myung’s one-year-old government is shadowed by polarising special-counsel investigations.

Indonesia – The Sounds Project Vol. 9 Takes Over Jakarta

Upbeat and outward-facing

The Sounds Project Vol. 9 runs from 7 to 9 August at Ecovention and Ecopark Ancol in Jakarta under the theme ‘Beyond Memories,’ with a line-up of more than 120 Indonesian and international acts including JET, Neck Deep, Tulus, Raisa and Hindia.

The three-day festival underscores how strongly the festival economy is driving post-pandemic urban youth culture in Southeast Asia, defiantly shrugging off the region’s growing geopolitical tensions.

The Bigger Picture

Asia’s mood this week is braced and bifurcated. Coastal China and Taiwan are in storm-watch mode as Typhoon Dolphin closes in, while a fresh Scarborough Shoal show of force and a surprise Chinese factory contraction keep security-plus-slowdown anxiety high.

The Philippines leans defiantly on United Nations legal filings and its alliance with the United States as it absorbs China’s largest-ever Scarborough Shoal drills, while President Marcos Jr.’s chart-deposit strategy has made the reef a flashpoint once more.

Yet the same week floods Seoul and Jakarta with football stars and festival crowds, a powerful reminder that consumer and cultural confidence is running hot across the region even as the geopolitical weather darkens.

Asia Intelligence Brief August 4: What We Are Watching

  • Today – Typhoon Dolphin’s track and intensity, with Taiwan considering a sea warning on Friday.
  • This week – The Coupang Play Series in Seoul and The Sounds Project in Jakarta test Asia’s premium consumer confidence.
