Against that, Zambia’s orderly election offers a rare, fragile note of democratic normalcy.

DR Congo – Record Ebola Outbreak

Largest outbreak on record intensifies

The DR Congo is suffering its biggest Ebola epidemic ever, with World Health Organisation data through late July showing 3,605 cases and 1,587 deaths, both up roughly 13% week-on-week.

Ituri province alone accounts for around 88% of all confirmed cases, and the WHO says the outbreak is intensifying even as a new treatment centre opened in Bunia on 3 August.

Health workers on strike over unpaid wages

The mood among front-line responders is one of exhaustion and bitter abandonment, as health workers have been on strike for more than two months over performance bonuses that have gone unpaid.

Exhausted and feeling abandoned, the very people risking their lives to contain the virus are doing so while their own wages never arrive.

Sudan – RSF Atrocities and El-Obeid Under Siege

Genocide hallmarks and crimes against humanity

A July Amnesty International report concluded the Rapid Support Forces committed crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing in capturing El Fasher, and a United Nations mission said the massacre bore the hallmarks of genocide.

Moral outrage and dread now define the mood as the war shifts to North Kordofan, where roughly 500,000 civilians are trapped under RSF siege in El-Obeid, entirely cut off from aid.

‘The next El Fasher’

Officials warn bluntly that El-Obeid could become the next El Fasher unless an all-out ground assault is averted in the weeks ahead.

Central commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, was named in the genocide findings and is now driving the siege, making him the central figure in Africa’s gravest humanitarian crisis.

An unpaid, striking health corps fighting a record Ebola epidemic, half a million civilians left to starve in a besieged Sudanese city, and an ailing opposition leader collapsing in a Kampala courtroom all read as the same story of states either absent or predatory.

Zambia – General Election in Nine Days

Two-horse race for the presidency

Zambia votes on 13 August with incumbent Hakainde Hichilema seeking a second term in a contest analysts describe as a straight two-horse race against Brian Mundubile of the Tonse Alliance.

A candidate must secure more than 50% of the vote to avoid a runoff, lending a knife-edge tension to the final week of campaigning.

Disinflation versus cost-of-living anger

The government is touting inflation’s fall from 24% at Hichilema’s 2021 inauguration to just 6.5% in June 2026, alongside roughly US$12 billion in fresh mining investment.

Yet the mood of the electorate remains cautiously hopeful but weary over the cost of living, making the vote a test of whether economic repair can trump persistent household frustration.

South Africa – Xenophobia Wave Defies Court Order

Sustained anti-immigrant unrest

South Africa is experiencing its most sustained bout of anti-immigration unrest since 2019, with police reporting more than 900 arrests during a wave of protests.

The mood is angry and increasingly scapegoating, as economic pain curdles into vigilante nativism that the courts appear unable to restrain.

Clinics blocked despite High Court ban

Operation Dudula continues barring foreign nationals from Johannesburg clinics despite a November 2025 High Court order that banned the practice.

The unrest is fuelled by unemployment above 30%, with youth joblessness exceeding 60%, creating fertile ground for hostility towards foreigners.

Uganda – Besigye Collapses in Treason Trial

Opposition leader in intensive care

Veteran opposition figure Kizza Besigye, 69, collapsed in the dock during his treason trial in Kampala on 29 July and was reported by his wife to be in intensive care the following day.

He has been detained without bail for months as prosecutors present evidence of an alleged plot to overthrow President Museveni, who won a controversial seventh term in January.

A fearful and defiant political landscape

Bobi Wine, Museveni’s main rival, fled into exile after the disputed election, leaving a captive opposition and a population that is at once fearful and defiant under an entrenched incumbent.

Besigye’s courtroom collapse turned his trial into an international rights flashpoint, encapsulating the sense of a state that stifles dissent while the opposition’s most recognisable face fights for his life.

The Bigger Picture

State capacity and legitimacy form the through-line across the continent today: health systems, courts and civilian protection are all under visible strain.

In DR Congo an unpaid health corps battles a record epidemic, in Sudan half a million civilians are cut off from aid under siege, and in Uganda an ailing opposition leader collapsed in court, each story a variation of institutions failing those they should protect.

Zambia’s orderly election on 13 August offers a rare democratic counterpoint, a moment of potential stability that stands apart from the region’s prevailing anxiety.
