Brazil: exports from Rio Grande do Sul reach 2nd highest volume

Rio Grande do Sul exported US$3.2 billion in the first two months of the year, the second-highest volume in history.

Compared to the same period last year, exports dropped 1.1%, according to information from the Canal Rural website, on Monday 10.

The Rio Grande do Sul state remained among the five largest exporters, behind São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, and Mato Grosso.

Among the products, the highlight is non-manufactured tobacco, which represented more than US$406 million, up 23%, followed by grains, which had a drop of more than 18% in sales, and soybeans, with a 25% drop, totaling US$176 million.

Chicken meat, on the other hand, had a 25% increase, cellulose had a nearly 40% increase, and soybean oil increased by 103%.

Rio Grande do Sul exports to 161 countries, with China leading imports, with 16% of the total.

Next in line are the European Union, the United States, Indonesia, and Argentina.

Indonesia was the country that most increased its purchases from Rio Grande do Sul in the first two months of the year, with an increase of 107% and more than US$94 million.

Grains and soybean meal boosted exports to Indonesia, while the increase in sales to China was due to the growth in sales of unmanufactured tobacco, pork, and chicken.
