Vasco Climbs Standings with Win Over Fortaleza

Vasco triumphed over Fortaleza 1-0 in the 27th round of the Brazilian Serie A Championship.

It took place at São Januário Stadium, filled to capacity with eager fans. The lone goal came from Dimitri Payet, a French player on the Vasco team.

He scored this crucial goal 12 minutes into the second half, marking his first for the team. As a result of this win, Vasco moved up to 16th place in the league table.

Now, they have 30 points, equal to Santos, who are in the first relegation position. Santos has a game scheduled against Red Bull Bragantino on Thursday.

In contrast, Fortaleza dropped down to seventh place. This puts their aspirations for a Copa Libertadores spot in 2024 in jeopardy.

During the game, Fortaleza’s goalkeeper, João Ricardo, drew attention for his skill. He made several impressive saves in the first half.

Despite these efforts, he couldn’t stop Payet’s second-half goal. His view was blocked by his own defenders at that crucial moment.

Juan Pablo Vojvoda, the Fortaleza coach, chose to rest three key players.

This strategy likely aims to keep the team fresh for their upcoming Copa Sul-Americana final on October 28.

Conversely, Payet, who was Vasco’s significant signing this season, was active throughout the match. He left the field to loud applause from the crowd after his goal.

Looking ahead, Vasco will face off against Flamengo this coming Sunday. Fortaleza will play against Bahia on Saturday.

These matches are part of the ongoing Serie A Championship, adding further excitement to an already gripping season.
