Turkey and Africa: A Growing Alliance

In 1997, the European Union excluded Turkey from membership talks, leading Turkey to pivot its focus toward Africa.

This move was a response to perceived cultural biases within the EU.

Turkey launched the “Action Plan for Africa” in 1998, followed by the “Opening to Africa” program in 2005, marking a strategic shift.

These initiatives have significantly boosted Turkey-Africa trade, increasing it eightfold in two decades from $5 to $40 billion.

Turkish contractors are actively engaged in construction projects valued at approximately $85 billion. Turkish Airlines operates flights to over 60 destinations across Africa.

In 2021, Turkey’s defense industry successfully exported goods exceeding $288 million in value, with Turkish investments expanding into new areas like renewable energy.

Turkey’s distinct position as a Muslim-majority country with democratic values and its EU candidacy set it apart.

Its approach, known as the “Ankara Consensus,” emphasizes political equality and mutual development, avoiding governance conditions.

This policy resonates with African countries, steering clear of colonial dynamics.

Furthermore, Turkey and Africa share a goal of reforming global governance, seeking a more inclusive international decision-making process.

This shared vision has deepened ties and expanded Turkey‘s diplomatic footprint across Africa.

Turkey’s engagement also includes security aspects, with an increasing presence in Africa’s arms market.

The sale of Turkish drones highlights Turkey’s commitment to Africa’s security needs.

As Turkey strengthens its ties with Africa, it presents an alternative model of international cooperation.

However, this partnership enhances Turkey’s global stature and supports African nations in gaining political representation globally.

Together, they are building a partnership that promises mutual benefits and a shared future.
