The big plan to link the Gulf with South Asia

The U.S., India, Saudi Arabia, and UAE are talking about a major infrastructure deal. This plan aims to link the Gulf with South Asia through trains and boats.

A source close to the talks confirmed this. No word is yet if this will be announced at the G20 summit in New Delhi.

A recent Axios report suggests an announcement, maybe even Saturday, could come soon.

Jake Sullivan, a U.S. advisor, could not confirm the deal. He said the plan is important and would benefit all countries involved.

Earlier, Sullivan met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. They talked about a safer and better-connected Middle East.

This project could change how Gulf nations trade with South Asia. For the U.S., this could be a small win against China’s global projects.

China has a big plan called “One Belt, One Road.” This plan funds projects around the world.

China has been increasing its role in the Middle East in recent years. For example, it helped Saudi Arabia and Iran become friends again.

China’s President, Xi Jinping, will host a global forum soon. This forum will discuss China’s big plan and include leaders like Russia’s Putin.

Context

The Gulf region has long been a key player in the global energy market. It’s rich in oil and natural gas reserves.

On the other hand, South Asia is a growing economic region with a large population. Both regions could gain a lot from stronger ties.

Trains and maritime routes can significantly boost trade and connectivity. However, previous efforts to link the regions faced obstacles like political tensions.

The United States has been pushing for more stability in the Middle East. The U.S. aims to counter China’s growing influence with this new plan.

The concept of large infrastructure projects is not new. In history, projects like the Suez Canal have shifted global trade dynamics.

A successful project could pave the way for further economic and strategic partnerships. Both the U.S. and China view such projects as ways to extend influence.

This upcoming deal could become a new chapter in this ongoing global competition.
