São Paulo’s New Airport: A Key to Future Growth

Minister Silvio Costa Filho announced plans for a new São Paulo airport on February 26, 2024.

He stressed its role in meeting rising passenger and cargo needs on EXAME’s “Macro em Pauta.”

This move addresses the expected growth in Brazil’s aviation industry, with passenger numbers forecast to hit 135 million in three years.

São Paulo, contributing 30% to this figure, saw a 15% increase in air travel in 2023. Hence, a new airport is crucial.

This initiative targets the booming demand for air travel.

With passenger figures jumping from 98 million to 112 million in 2023, the new airport will boost São Paulo’s capacity significantly.

This is vital, as the state plays a major role in Brazil’s aviation sector.

Designed for cargo and executive flights, the new site’s location near highways and railroads will ease congestion at Congonhas Airport.

In addition, it offers a practical option for São Paulo’s interior, improving access and efficiency.

Details on capacity and start dates are pending, but feasibility studies should conclude by mid-year.

Alongside, a R$2 billion ($400 million) upgrade for Congonhas Airport, funded by Aena, will be revealed on March 18.

This investment is supported by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Governor Tarcísio de Freitas.

It aims to enhance capacity and infrastructure within three to four years.

These steps by the Ministry of Ports and Airports show a clear strategy to prepare São Paulo for future transport needs.

However, this comprehensive plan highlights the importance of updating infrastructure to match growth rates.

It aims to ensure efficient and accessible transportation for both cargo and passengers.
