São Paulo on the Verge of Dengue Epidemic

São Paulo is nearing an epidemic threshold for dengue fever, with current cases reaching 295 per 100,000 people.

The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies an epidemic at rates above 300 per 100,000, which puts the city close to official epidemic status.

The city witnessed a dramatic increase in dengue cases, jumping by 1,668% from the early weeks of 2023 to 2024.

Women between 20 and 49 years old are at higher risk.

Over half a million cases have been reported statewide, with 224,945 confirmed and more under review. Deaths and further investigations into fatalities are ongoing.

Responding to the crisis, São Paulo declared an emergency in early March, affecting 44 municipalities.

Experts link the dengue spread to climate changes and El Niño, which create ideal conditions for mosquitoes.

The lack of immunity in younger populations and the natural cycle of dengue also play roles.

Despite the availability of 1.2 million dengue vaccine doses, only about 250,000 have been used.

Skepticism from Brazilians toward government vaccinations has grown, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, with forced vaccination amid societal exclusion threats.

Even today, Brazil is the sole nation currently still mandating COVID-19 vaccines for children six months to four years old, a policy enacted on January 31, 2023.

The health ministry aims to vaccinate in endemic areas, focusing on at-risk children and teens.

Tests are vital for disease diagnosis and management. The state aims to give repellents to 50,000 pregnant women.

Dengue causes fever, pain, and rashes. Mosquito control is crucial, requiring water control and cleanliness.

The worsening situation stresses the need for quick vaccination, diagnosis, and prevention to fight dengue in São Paulo, emphasizing community involvement.
