Russia Further Strengthens Energy Ties with China

During the first six months of 2024, Moscow successfully exported a substantial 55.122 million tons of crude oil to China.

This shipment, worth $32.807 billion, came despite Western attempts to isolate Russian energy from global markets.

This represents a 4.81% increase from the same period last year. Then, Russia sold 52.590 million tons of oil valued at $28.349 billion to Beijing. In June alone, Russia exported 8.43 million tons of oil to China, worth $4.914 billion.

To put this in perspective, China imported 275.484 million tons of crude oil in January-June 2024. This cost Beijing $167.390 billion.

Russia has become a key player in this market, overtaking Saudi Arabia as China’s top oil supplier in 2023.

It solidified its lead by exporting 107 million tons to China, marking a 24% increase from the previous year.

Western countries, reacting to Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, imposed sanctions on Russian energy resources.
