Mexican Air Force’s Limitations Revealed by Crisis

Recent events in Israel have highlighted Mexico’s Air Force shortcomings and drawn criticism over its tardy condemnation of attacks on Israeli civilians.

The crisis also revealed that Mexico lacks an intercontinental aircraft for emergencies.

Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena announced that about 500 Mexicans in Israel had applied for emergency help.

Moreover, Hamas captured two Mexican citizens in Gaza. This underscores the urgency for Mexico to rethink its air capabilities.

To manage the crisis, Mexico sent a Boeing 737-800. Although modern, this plane can only carry 189 passengers and lacks intercontinental range.

The plane had to make several stops: first in Canada, then in Ireland, and finally in Turkey before reaching Israel.

A second Boeing followed a day later. Both planes later formed an air bridge between Tel Aviv and Madrid.

From there, stranded Mexicans had to arrange their own return trips to Mexico. Clearly, the Air Force needs a more capable aircraft for future emergencies. The next

Mexican government should think about adding a multi-role aircraft like the Airbus A330-200. This plane can carry 250 passengers and has a longer flight range.

As an example, Brazil’s Air Force uses the Airbus A330-200, called the KC-30 locally. This plane can fly up to 8,000 nautical miles.

Brazil even plans to convert this plane to an A300 MRTT. This conversion will further extend its capabilities, allowing for in-flight refueling and medical evacuations.

In summary, the Israel crisis revealed gaps in the Mexican Air Force’s readiness.

To better protect its citizens and act efficiently in global crises, Mexico should invest in a versatile, long-range aircraft.
