India’s Concern Over Myanmar Border Clashes

India recently expressed its concerns regarding the ongoing clashes in Myanmar between ethnic rebel groups and the military junta.

The conflict has caused thousands of Myanmar nationals to flee into India. Arindam Bagchi, spokesperson for India’s External Affairs, spoke about this issue.

He highlighted the movement of Myanmar nationals into India due to fighting in Myanmar’s Chin state.

Bagchi emphasized India’s deep concern regarding such border incidents. He also advocated for dialogue to end the violence.

The Chin National Defense Force (CNDF) has reportedly taken control of a border checkpoint in Rikhawdar.

This takeover followed several days of intense fighting in northwest Myanmar.

As a result, 5,000 to 6,000 Myanmar nationals have sought refuge in India, according to official sources.

Bagchi didn’t specify the exact number of refugees from this recent violence. Among the refugees are 42 Myanmar soldiers who crossed into India’s Mizoram state.

They surrendered their weapons and submitted to Indian authorities.

The United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reports that India hosts nearly 75,000 individuals from Myanmar.

These include members of the Rohingya minority and others fleeing the military coup’s aftermath.

The 2021 military coup in Myanmar ended a decade of democratic progress. It overthrew the government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who is now imprisoned.

This coup has led Myanmar into a severe crisis. It has also exacerbated the country’s longstanding guerrilla warfare, with new anti-junta militias emerging.
