EU and Mercosul Trade Deal: Agricultural Crisis Adds Complexity

Josep Borrell, the European Union’s top diplomat for foreign affairs, expressed concerns about an agricultural crisis in the EU.

He fears this might delay the free trade deal with Mercosul. Borrell spoke to lawmakers in the European Parliament, highlighting the crisis as a potential hurdle.

Under negotiation for two decades, the deal now awaits Europe’s decision. Latin American countries are keen to finalize it.

However, recent challenges in the EU’s agricultural sector complicate the situation. France, especially, is facing farmer protests.

These protests bring attention to the economic hardships in the agriculture sector. They also fuel opposition demands for President Macron to reconsider the deal.

Borrell underscored the geopolitical risks of delaying the deal. He suggested that others might fill the void if the EU doesn’t act.

Mercosul countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia, have expressed urgency in finalizing the agreement.

They are aiming for a prompt and balanced conclusion.

After lengthy discussions, the two blocs had announced a free trade agreement in 2019.

However, the EU’s request for an extra chapter on environmental standards has led to additional delays.

This requirement adds another layer to an already complex negotiation process.
