Chile Markets Cool After The Rally As Dollar Holds Firm And IPSA Pulls Back
Key Points
- USD/CLP opened near 917–918, close to the central bank’s “dólar observado” of 917.45, after closing Wednesday around 918.3.
- The IPSA fell 0.53% to 10,134.52, its third straight decline, as an early rise reversed into profit-taking.
- The central bank expects inflation to reach 3% in Q1 2026 and sees a firmer 2026 outlook, but a higher neutral-rate estimate is lifting local swap rates.
Chile’s peso began Thursday steady, but traders stayed cautious as the U.S. dollar held firm ahead of U.S. inflation data. The dollar index hovered around 98.4 in early positioning, with fresh Fed-policy chatter keeping markets on guard.
At home, the Central Bank of Chile’s latest Inflation Report highlighted faster-than-expected disinflation and forecast inflation returning to the 3% target in the first quarter of 2026.
But the report also raised the bank’s estimate of the neutral interest rate, helping push swap rates up and cooling rate-cut optimism.

Flow data points to a market turning less directional. Central bank figures showed offshore players reduced their net position against the peso by about $430 million, leaving an offshore net stance near $4.4 billion, the least aggressive since mid-November.
Scotiabank strategists Shaun Osborne and Eric Theoret said the broader dollar bid reflected holiday position adjustments, with some haven demand tied to Venezuela-related supply headlines.
City Index analyst Fawad Razaqzada said recent U.S. releases have been more confirmation than catalyst. Technically, the 4-hour chart hints the peso’s downside momentum is easing, while the daily trend still looks heavy.

Santiago equities echoed the consolidation. The IPSA’s five biggest gainers were Oro Blanco (+5.92%), Nortegran (+4.47%), SQM-B (+4.39%), Ingevec (+1.50%) and NUAM (+0.98%).
The five biggest decliners were Andina-A (-4.29%), Besalco (-3.36%), Itaú Chile (-2.72%), SMSAAM (-2.56%) and CMPC (-2.47%). The heaviest traded names included SQM-B, LATAM Airlines, Banco de Chile, Santander Chile and Enel Américas.
Offshore, the iShares MSCI Chile ETF (ECH) ended Wednesday at $38.28 on roughly 400,000 shares, with NAV near $38.46 and net assets around $998 million.
The next swing factor is external: a surprise in U.S. inflation would quickly feed into the dollar, rates, and Chile’s year-end positioning.
