Brazilians Doubt Supreme Court’s Car Wash Ruling

A Genial/Quaest survey from March 3, 2024, shows 74% of Brazilians believe the Supreme Federal Court’s (STF) decision to annul Operation Car Wash penalties may boost corruption.

This view contrasts with 14% who disagree and 12% unsure or silent. Researchers asked 2,000 people, aged 16 and up, for their opinions between February 25 and 27, 2024. The survey’s error margin is ±2.2 percentage points.

This adds to the findings of a recent survey by PoderData found that 39% of Brazilians think corruption has risen since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office.

Criticism varies by demographic, hitting highs among men (79%), Southern residents (80%), and 2022 Bolsonaro voters (85%).

STF Minister Dias Toffoli, in September 2023, invalidated Odebrecht’s (now Novonor) leniency deal evidence, affecting many cases.

He labeled ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT party) imprisonment a severe judicial mistake.

Following Toffoli’s ruling, the São Paulo Public Prosecutor’s Office and the National Association of Prosecutors appealed, claiming the decision misinterprets facts and misuses evidence.

These appeals are under consideration.

The survey also gauged opinions on Sergio Moro, ex-judge and now Senator, regarding his Operation Car Wash role.

Forty-four percent disapprove of Moro, while 40% approve, creating a statistical tie once considering the ±2.2 point margin. Twelve percent stayed neutral, with 3% undecided.

This finding reflects a deep divide in public opinion, underscoring the complex relationship between justice, politics, and public perception in Brazil.

Transparency and fairness remain paramount

The STF’s decisions, especially on high-profile corruption cases, have significant implications.

They influence public trust in institutions and the ongoing battle against corruption.

Moro’s contentious role further highlights the political and judicial challenges in addressing corruption effectively.

As Brazil navigates these waters, transparency and fairness remain paramount, shaping the nation’s path toward integrity and accountability.
