Brazil Stocks Climb As IBC-Br Miss Rekindles Selic-Cut Trade
Key Points
- A weaker IBC-Br print pushed local rates down and lifted the bank-heavy Ibovespa above 162,000.
- Rede D’Or’s large payout and bank strength drove gains; Braskem sank on ownership headlines.
- With China data missing forecasts and oil softer, today’s Copom minutes and delayed U.S. payroll are the next swing factors.
Brazilian shares rallied on Monday after the central bank’s IBC-Br activity index fell 0.20% in October, against expectations for a 0.10% rise.
The Ibovespa gained 1.07% to 162,481.74 on about R$23.9 billion (about $4.4 billion) in turnover, while the spot dollar ended higher at R$5.4219 (about $1). Early Tuesday, index futures were marked around 162.8k.
The miss revived near-term easing bets. Empiricus Research analyst Laís Costa said the rates curve swung toward a 25-basis-point Selic cut in January, with implied odds near three-quarters.

Markets tend to welcome such an outcome when it flows from data and consistent rules, rather than sudden, state-first policy impulses.
Winners were led by healthcare and financials. Rede D’Or (RDOR3, +4.71%) topped the board after approving R$8.1 billion (about $1.5 billion) in dividends and interest on equity, payable Dec. 30 (record date Dec. 18).
ISA CTEEP (ISAE4, +4.49%) rose after a JPMorgan upgrade, Hapvida (HAPV3, +4.01%) climbed on expectations of firmer health-plan pricing, Santander Units (SANB11, +3.10%) advanced with banks, and CPFL Energia (CPFE3, +2.93%) benefited from the lower-rate backdrop. Banks also gained after Washington removed Justice Alexandre de Moraes and his spouse from a U.S. sanctions list.
Markets Mixed as Momentum Hesitates
The five biggest losers were Assaí (ASAI3, -2.56%), Azzas 2154 (AZZA3, -2.40%), Braskem (BRKM5, -2.39%) after IG4 moved toward an agreement tied to Novonor’s stake, CSN Mineração (CMIN3, -1.57%), and Vamos (VAMO3, -1.38%).
Vale edged up about 0.5%, while Petrobras’ gains were tempered as Brent hovered near $61, down about 1%. Overnight, the S&P 500 slipped 0.16%, Europe was higher, and Asian benchmarks fell after China’s November retail sales rose 1.3% year-on-year and industrial output 4.8%, both below forecasts.
BOVA11 holds about R$13.9 billion (about $2.6 billion) in assets and roughly R$2.2 billion (about $410 million) in 12-month inflows. Technically, 4-hour momentum has turned up, but daily momentum still lags and the weekly picture is stretched.
