Brazil Sets New Records in Meat and Grain Output

Brazil, home to the world’s largest cattle population of around 240 million, is setting new records in meat and grain production this year.

In the 2023/24 season, Brazil aims to produce 30.8 million tons of meat. This includes poultry, pork, and beef.

High corn production is a key factor in this achievement. Brazil also maintains public reserves to ensure a stable supply.

A September report on the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA) shows that Brazil will harvest a record 318.1 million tons of grains, legumes, and oilseeds in 2023.

Compared to 2022, this is a 20.9% increase, or an extra 54.9 million tons. The estimate has even risen by 1.5%, or 4.8 million tons, since August.

Key crops like soybeans, corn, and wheat will also see record yields.

Main Regions

All five of Brazil’s main regions show annual growth in production. The Midwest leads with a 23.2% increase, followed by the South at 26.3%.

The North, Southeast, and Northeast also show gains, ranging from 7.6% to 21.4%.

Monthly data shows small changes. The North, Midwest, and Southeast regions have slight increases.

However, the South and Northeast see minor declines. The state of Mato Grosso is the top grain producer, contributing 31.3% of the total.

Other leading states like Paraná, Goiás, and Rio Grande do Sul also make significant contributions. Together, these states account for 80.3% of the total grain output.

Lastly, the land area for crops is growing. This year, it will reach 77.8 million hectares, up 6.3% from last year.

This means an additional 4.6 million hectares of farmland. This also marks a 0.4% increase since August, adding another 338,967 hectares.
