Brazil: Rio de Janeiro police operations close 27 schools as classes resume

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On the first day of the 2022 school year, some 27 municipal and state schools remained closed in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, due to police operations in the region.

On Monday, February 7, the State Police conducted operations in the Vila Aliança community, in Bangu, and removed barricades erected by criminals on streets in Senador Camará and Estrada do Viegas, in the Sapo community, also in the western part of the city.

According to the State Department of Education, the Marieta Cunha da Silva School, in Bangu, and the Rubem Braga Ciep 313, in Senador Camará, had no classroom activities to guarantee the safety of students and employees.

In the municipal network, 25 schools in the Vila Aliança, Senador Camará and Coreia neighborhoods remained closed because of police operations.

According to the State Police, the operations complied with the restrictions on the state’s public safety policy, in line with the Federal Supreme Court’s (STF) Argument of Breach of Fundamental Precept (ADPF) 635, decided on February 2.
