Brazil: ONS forecasts rise in reservoir levels for the last week of the year
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The National System Operator (ONS) on a report released on Thursday, December 23, forecasts an increase in the level of reservoirs of the National Integrated System’s (SIN) four subsystems for next week, December 25 through 31.
As a result of the rainfall expected for the period, the Southeast/Midwest subsystem, which accounts for some 70% of Brazil’s energy generation, will reach 24.9% of its storage capacity.

Last week, the subsystem’s reservoir level stood at 21.1%. The forecast for the South, Northeast and North subsystems is that they will reach 41.1%, 50% and 47.8%, respectively.
The forecast for the energy load in the SIN for next week shows a decrease of 0.6%, compared to December 2020. The load reduction is due to the end of year holidays, which interrupt or reduce the workload in productive sectors, according to the ONS.
In addition, the operator states that industrial recovery slowed down, which is largely responsible for the country’s energy consumption, because of intense pressure on prices, market uncertainty and the rise in interest rates.
The ONS forecasts high temperatures in all Brazilian regions, mainly in the interior of the states of São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná, which could be higher than observed this week.
