Chile car market becomes the most important in the region, only behind Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Chile’s National Automobile Association released its report on the Chilean automotive market in 2021.
The association, which includes more than 60 brands, said that 415,581 vehicles were sold in the past fiscal year, making this year the second-best on record (surpassed only by 2018, when 417,038 new cars were patented).
The fiscal year 2021 also goes down in history as Chile became the second best-selling market in South America, surpassed only by giant Brazil.

Specifically, the domestic market grew 60.6% despite the lack of cars. Chevrolet is the undisputed market leader, with 38,657 new vehicles sold. On the other hand, the best-selling vehicle was the Chery Tiggo 2 SUV with 10,956 units.
Looking at the overall breakdown by segment, SUVs took first place. 41.9% of the vehicles sold in 2021 were family vehicles (174,278 units). They were followed by passenger cars with 29.2% (121,372), vans with 17.7% (73,370) and commercial vehicles with 11.2% (45,561).
CHINA IS THE STRONGEST PLAYER
Another factor that is becoming increasingly important in the market is the role of China. 38.5% of the cars sold were manufactured in China. In second place is India, with 11.3% of the pie, and in third place in Brazil, 7.8%. It is followed by Japan (6.6%), South Korea (6.1%), France (5.5%), and Mexico (5.3%).
By comparison, cars of Chinese origin accounted for a quarter of the total market share in 2020 (see note).
