UN representative in Sudan deemed ‘unwelcome’ by the Sudanese Government

The Sudanese government has officially labeled Volker Perthes, the United Nations (UN) envoy from Germany to Sudan, as ‘persona non grata’.

This action comes amidst allegations against him for weeks, claiming he is culpable for the ongoing conflict in the country, which still rages as of Friday, June 9.

In a public statement, the government justified its decision, accusing Perthes of aligning with select political factions and promoting a political landscape that favors certain parties over others.

“The Republic of Sudan’s government has informed the Secretary-General of the United Nations of our decision to declare Volker Perthes a ‘persona non grata’ effective immediately,” announced the Foreign Ministry on Thursday, June 8.

The Ministry further elaborated that it requested the UN arrange Perthes’ replacement. However, upon the UN’s refusal, the Sudanese government felt it had no choice but to declare him unwelcome.

General Abdel Fatah al Burhan, head of the Sudanese army, had previously called for Perthes’ resignation.

He alleged that Perthes was accountable for the conflict that broke out on April 15 with the paramilitary forces of General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
