Proposal for climate neutrality target by 2030 is rejected in a referendum in Berlin

A proposal to adopt the goal of making Berlin climate neutral by 2030 was rejected in a referendum this Sunday (26) because it did not receive enough votes in favor.

According to the German news agency dpa, with about 98% of the votes counted, there were about 423,000 votes in favor of the proposal and about 405,000 against it.

However, at least 25% of the Berlin electorate was required to vote in favor of the proposal, which would require about 608,000 votes.

Climate neutrality is a scenario in which carbon emissions in a location are fully offset, which would require reduced fossil fuel use and environmental measures.

With the rejection of the proposal, Berlin maintains a goal set by law to become climate neutral by 2045, which is also Germany’s national goal.
