Supply trucks enter Niger from Burkina Faso despite sanctions

Despite the sanctions set by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a convoy of 311 supply trucks transporting essential goods has successfully traveled from Burkina Faso to Niger.

This move comes following the July 26 coup in Niger.

The Niger Armed Forces confirmed, through an official release by the ANP agency, that the National Council unprecedentedly initiated this mission for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP), the current governing body since the coup.

This operation had the support of Burkina Faso authorities.

Reports indicate that these trucks originated from various regional countries and were safeguarded by both air and ground military measures to ensure their safety during transit.

State-run Télé Sahel showcased footage of the convoy being warmly greeted by residents in the towns it passed, particularly in Téra, where locals publicly expressed their support for the CNSP.

For nearly a month, Niger has been experiencing a border shutdown as an ECOWAS-imposed penalty after the military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

This sanction is intended to persuade the coup instigators, backed by the military boards of Mali and Burkina Faso, to revert to constitutional order.

General Abdurahamane Tiani, CNSP’s president, recently appealed for a comprehensive national dialogue aiming to draft a new constitution.

Additionally, he allotted a 30-day timeframe for the country’s political entities to put forward their suggestions for the transitional process, which he expects will last no longer than three years.
