Poland begins construction of an electrified fence on the border with Russia

On Tuesday, Polish authorities started constructing an electrified fence on the border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, beginning in the vicinity of Bezledy and Sepopol in the northeast of the country.

According to the Polish Border Guard spokeswoman, Anna Michalska, the first works involved installing wiring and the foundation of poles for surveillance cameras, according to the Polish news agency PAP.

According to Michalska, once the works are completed, the authorities can ensure “the detection of all events related to border crime, particularly unregulated immigration and smuggling of goods”.

According to the Polish authorities, the works are scheduled to last until the end of September, when the 199 kilometers of shared border between the two countries will be completely delimited.

For the control of this new installation – equipped with 3,000 surveillance cameras and 700 kilometers of wiring – the Government launched at the end of March a remodeling of the headquarters of the Border Guard Department in Ketrzyn, close to the border.
