Venezuela strengthens diplomatic relations with Colombia, France and Chile

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro recently welcomed the new ambassadors from Colombia, France, and Chile, marking a positive turn in Venezuela’s diplomatic relationships with these countries.

Historically, Venezuela’s relationships with these nations have experienced ups and downs due to varied political disagreements.

However, recent times have seen a gradual mending of these relationships.

This appointment comes during a period when both Caracas and Bogotá have successfully revived their bilateral ties, which had been on hold from early 2019 to August 2022.

Rengifo’s role marks the second ambassadorial assignment from Colombian President Gustavo Petro since his election last year.

France’s new representative, Emmanuel Pineda, was also introduced to Maduro.

In early 2019, France had challenges recognizing the Venezuelan government and instead supported an opposition leader as Venezuela’s “interim president.”

However, following a shift in stance, French President Emmanuel Macron acknowledged Maduro at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) last year.

Since then, France has taken a more constructive approach in supporting dialogue within Venezuelan political circles.

Lastly, Maduro also received Chile’s new ambassador to Venezuela, Jaime Gazmuri Mujica.

The Venezuelan foreign ministry has noted a steady strengthening in relations between the two countries.
