Internet acccess reaches 91% of Uruguayan households

Household internet access in Uruguay grew to 91% in 2022, up from 88% registered in 2019, according to the fifth edition of the Survey on the Use of Information and Communication Technologies (Eutic).

“As a consequence of this growth, the connection gap between Montevideo and Interior continued to decrease” and stands at 95% of households with internet access in the capital and 88% in the interior.

“Internet use among individuals continues to grow and intensify. 90% of people aged 14 and over are Internet users, and 83% use the Internet daily,” Eutic highlighted.

The main use of the Internet “has to do with communication” since “all people who use the Internet participate in some social network, and the vast majority use it to make calls or video calls” (Photo internet reproduction)

This figure “is the highest recorded” by the survey since 2010, a growth that “occurred mainly among people aged 65 and over, and people with a low educational level”.

The survey warns that “despite the increase in Internet use, there are still differences in the level of digital skills” that are evident “mainly between younger and older people (in favor of the younger ones)”.

These differences are also found “between people with lower and higher levels of education (in favor of people with higher levels of education)”.

The main use of the Internet “has to do with communication” since “all people who use the Internet participate in some social network, and the vast majority use it to make calls or video calls”.

In addition, in the post-pandemic period, the frequency of internet use increased for activities related to health, banking services, shopping, studies, and access to government services.

Eutic is an initiative of the Agency for Electronic Government and the Information and Knowledge Society (Agesic), and the National Statistics Institute (INE), which has been conducted every three years since 2010, based on a subsample of the Continuous Household Survey (ECH).
