Peruvian economy shrinks by 0.43 % in the first quarter

Peru’s economy decreased by 0.43 percent between January and March 2023.

However, in the annual period April 2022-March 2023, it registered an increase of 1.68 percent, informed yesterday Monday by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

Meanwhile, national production increased by 0.22 percent last March, compared to the same month of the previous year, said the institution in its technical report “National Production”.

The item that showed the most significant growth in the third month was fishing, with 22.09 percent, due to the effect of the greater extraction of species of marine origin (28.45 percent), with an increase in direct human consumption (41 percent), while indirect human consumption fell 99.9 percent.

Inland fishing contracted 4.33 percent due to the lower species extraction for freezing and the preparation of cured products.

The mining and hydrocarbon sector followed with an expansion of 9.28 percent, thanks to the 8.70 percent increase in metallic mining activity due to higher production volumes of copper, molybdenum, iron, gold, and lead.

However, there was a reduction in zinc, tin, and silver.

The performance of the hydrocarbons subsector increased by 12.66 percent due to the higher level of crude oil exploitation by 50.4 percent and natural gas by 15.33 percent.

Electricity, gas, and water also recorded an increase (6.47 percent) in the third month, as there was a higher electric power generation (7.65 percent) and water production (0.02 percent).

However, gas distribution decreased (3.53 percent).

The others that have grown were traded by 2.95 percent; accommodation and restaurants by 2.60 percent; transportation, storage, and courier services by 1.81 percent; business services by 1.33 percent; and government services by 2.88 percent.

On the other hand, the sectors that decreased their production level were agriculture (2.56 percent), manufacturing (0.27 percent), construction (12.42 percent), telecommunications and other information services (9.68 percent), as well as the financial and insurance sector (6.09 percent).
