Paraguay aims to increase canola planting this season

By Carmen Luisa Ugueto Liendo

According to the portal La Nación, canola production in the new campaign aims to harvest 2.5 tonnes per hectare.

In this regard, Dante Servián, president of the Agricultural Coordinator of Paraguay (CAP) Itapúa, spoke with La Nación media about the production situation of the item and the intention to plant this year.

He said mass planting would begin in April up to May 10 at the latest, the ideal planting time for canola ripening.

“Generally, people want to come in about the first days of August, September to harvest an early soybean here in the south,” he noted.

As for this year’s sowing intention, he pointed out that it will exceed 100,000 hectares.

“It’s going to record seeding, at least in recent years again.”

“It is targeted to harvest 2.5 tonnes per hectare, it would be an ideal point, and I think with the technologies that exist today, that is feasible,” he expressed.

Regarding the cost of production per hectare, Servián pointed out that there is always an equation of more or less 1,000 to 1,100 kilos per hectare of produce and that, in this case, it would be around US$550 to US$600 per hectare.

TARGET MARKETS

The president of CAP Itapúa told LN that canola in the south has a very large processor, Oleaginosas Raatz, and that some companies export to Uruguay.

“Canola meal goes to Uruguay and canola oil to Chile, which are processed products,” he added.

Equally, the union representative mentioned that this year the mass planting could not be done in the south because the corn batches could not be done in time due to a delay in soybean maturation by at least 30 days due to weather issues.

“The soybean ripening was delayed, which meant that people could not have corn in February, so the option is canola because the soil must be cultivated.”

“The producer must have a crop throughout the year.”

“The area cannot be empty; it needs a winter crop”, he pointed out.
