Eight candidates will seek to win Ecuador’s Presidency in 2023

Eight presidential candidates have so far announced their intention to register for the early elections in Ecuador, scheduled for August 20.

The deadline for registration, as stipulated by the National Electoral Council (CNE), extends until the evening of August 13.

The contenders confirmed their registration include the 2021 presidential candidate, Yaku Perez, and Nory Pinela, representing the ‘Claro que se puede’ alliance.

Otto Sonnenholzner, the former vice-president from 2018 to 2020, and Erika Paredes from the Actuemos alliance have also been registered.

Additional candidates who have completed registration include Daniel Noboa and Verónica Abad, Bolívar Armijos and Linda Romero, Fernando Villavicencio, and Andrea González, and Xavier Hervas alongside Luz Marina Vega.

Anticipation surrounds the Citizen Revolution movement, led by former President Rafael Correa, and its expected registration of candidates Luisa González and former presidential aspirant Andréz Arauz.

Similarly, Jan Topic and his running mate, Diana Jácome, are expected to register for the ‘Juntos Triunfaremos’ alliance.

The Pachakutik movement and the Izquierda Democrática (ID) party are currently excluded from the extraordinary electoral process due to internal disputes.

The Creando Oportunidades (CREO) movement has announced that it will not field candidates for the Presidency or the National Assembly in the upcoming elections.

As of July 2022, there were 279 registered political groups in Ecuador, with 33 alliances registered for the extraordinary electoral process.
