Ecuador: the eventual impeachment of Lasso enters a definite phase

An eventual impeachment trial of Ecuador’s president, Guillermo Lasso, has entered its final phase in the National Assembly.

The Legislative has officially known the request through its Oversight Committee.

It will now have ten days to receive evidence against the president, another ten to evaluate them, and another similar period to issue a report on the matter that will serve as a recommendation to judge or not the head of state.

In the end, the trial process would be done in any case for the crime of embezzlement, as the Constitutional Court of Ecuador had already admitted last week.

The decision was taken by the affirmative vote of the nine members of the Oversight Commission.

Based on the report issued after the passage of this time, the president of the Legislative, Virgilio Sequicela, will have to summon the plenary of the Chamber to produce the final discussion in which it will be determined whether Lasso will be prosecuted or not, needing two-thirds of the parliamentary quorum (92 affirmative votes) to give way to his censure.

Last week, President Guillermo Lasso affirmed that he is innocent of the crimes for which he has been accused.

At the same time, he stated that the process “stinks”.
