Early elections in Ecuador to be monitored by 971 observers

Ecuador’s National Electoral Council (CNE) has accredited 971 national and international observers for the upcoming early presidential and legislative elections on August 20.

CNE President, Diana Atamaint, stated that 878 national and 93 international observers will supervise the entire voting process, including the counting and finalization of results.

These elections follow the dissolution of the National Assembly by President Guillermo Lasso on May 17 and the initiation of an impeachment trial against him.

More than 13 million voters are expected to vote for a new president, vice-president, and 137 assembly members. The elected officials will serve until May 2025.

The electoral campaign officially started on July 13 and will continue until August 17.

Eight presidential candidates are actively using social media platforms to share their agendas and convince voters.

The CNE has also completed printing of the electoral ballots, which have been transferred under military supervision to a company responsible for assembling electoral packages.

A preliminary simulation is planned for July 29 to test all technical, logistical, and operational procedures.
