Conservative Guillermo Lasso sworn in as Ecuador’s new president

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The businessman, banker, and center-right politician Guillermo Lasso was sworn in Monday, May 24, as the new president of Ecuador for the next four years, in a ceremony held at the National Assembly (Parliament), in Quito, attended by high authorities from several friendly countries.

The oath was taken by the President of the National Assembly, Guadalupe Llori, who also imposed the presidential sash and the decoration of the Great Collar of the National Order of Merit, the highest award of the Ecuadorian State.

King Felipe VI of Spain, the presidents of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro; Haiti, Jovenel Moise, and the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, as well as the foreign ministers of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Uruguay, Guatemala, Bolivia, Argentina, and Spain and other high authorities from several countries, participated in the ceremony.

Lasso, 65 years old, replaced Lenín Moreno, who leaves office after four years as president of a country burdened by an acute economic and health crisis, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
