Retired military and police officers protest against Petro’s security policies

Hundreds of retired military personnel rallied on Wednesday in Bogotá’s Plaza de Bolívar against the security policies of leftist Colombian President Gustavo Petro, precisely when he entered into an open confrontation with Prosecutor General Francisco Barbosa.

The demonstration, called by former members of the National Army and the Police, among other groups, served for the attendees to express their support for the forces of law and order in Colombia.

“In addition to the defense of democracy, the Constitution, and the separation of powers, we support the retired uniformed officers who seek to raise their voices against the attacks suffered by members of institutions such as the Police and the National Army by armed groups”, said the main spokesman of the protesters, retired Colonel Carlos Martinez.

In recent days this same square was the scene of a demonstration by the “Indigenous Guard”, an indigenous group that took to the streets armed with sticks and canes to demonstrate their support for the radical reform package proposed by Petro.
