Chilean Chamber approves the extension of Carabineros’ powers

The Chilean Chamber approved on Wednesday a bill that aims to strengthen the powers of the Carabineros, especially self-defense, to clarify and detail the duties of the agents.

The bill called ‘Ley Nain-Retamal’ has been approved by a large majority, with 137 votes in favor, two against, and another two abstentions, as reported by ‘El Mercurio’.

The law has already been approved in the Senate and will now be processed.

The Minister of Justice, Luis Cordero, celebrated Tuesday the law’s passage through the Senate.

After an eleven-hour debate due to the numerous amendments proposed, an agreement was reached to “give peace of mind to the police”.

The initiative’s approval, together with two other public security bills, was accelerated after the death of Sergeant Rita Olivares, who was shot in the head in the Valparaiso region during an operation to prevent a home robbery.
