Chile launches National Sovereignty Strategy for Food Security

Chile launched this Thursday the National Sovereignty Strategy for Food Security “Together we feed Chile”, which seeks to guide the State’s management and actions towards strengthening the food system’s assets, making it more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive, informed the Ministry of Agriculture of the South American country.

“This is fundamental in the country’s history. For the first time, there is a national strategy agreed with all the actors in agriculture and with many ministries,” said the Minister of Agriculture, Esteban Valenzuela.

He stressed that the plan is comprehensive because it considers the social, citizen, food, and economic aspects.

“What this strategy does is to respond to the clamor of a country for sustainable, safe food systems that value the heritage of the territories,” he said.

Valenzuela remarked that the food security strategy has a fundamental social and gender aspect.

“Here are the support chains for women farmers, for rural tables. Forty-nine percent of the people who benefited from INDAP (Institute for Agricultural Development) programs were women.”

“We will continue along this path, with young people and, in turn, territorial social programs such as the food banks implemented by the Ministry of Social Development,” he said.

For his part, the Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism, Nicolás Grau, added that this initiative is concerned with the country’s food sovereignty.

“It is a commitment that, as a government, we are going to fulfill; we are going to present this year this law that we are working on with the three main organizations of the world of the free fairs, and in this way, we are going to continue on the path that we have as a government”, said the Chilean minister.

The Chilean government stated that this initiative considers ten concrete measures that seek to advance more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive food systems to change the basis of the national food system.

The aim is to contribute to present and future food and nutritional security.
