51 councilors proclaimed in Chile to draft new proposal for the country’s Constitution

The Tribunal Calificador de Elecciones (Tricel) of Chile ratified yesterday the 51 constitutional councilors elected in the elections of last May 7 to draft a second proposal of Constitution for the Andean country.

The Tricel held a proclamation ceremony this morning before the Constitutional Council members took office on June 7, where the Chilean president, Gabriel Boric, participated.

As of this week, the 50 members of the body, plus one supernumerary member from native peoples, will begin to work based on a draft prepared by a council of experts previously appointed by the National Congress.

The resulting text will be submitted to a mandatory plebiscite vote on December 17.

All this after the marked rejection of the first proposal for a new Magna Carta submitted to a referendum in September 2022, intending to replace the Fundamental Charter in force since 1980, which installed the neoliberal model in the southern nation.

Said project, written by a mostly citizen and left-wing convention, which faced criticism for its management and lack of experience in the political field, emerged as a political solution to the social revolt of October 2019 against the increase in the cost of living and inequality.

Experts considered the constitutional proposal presented by that body as “too progressive” for the “moderate” voter of the southern nation.
