Accelerated procurement: Argentina confirms purchase of 156 Guaraní armored vehicles from Brazil

Argentina intends to purchase 156 Guaraní armored combat vehicles as soon as possible.

Francisco Cafiero, the country’s Secretary of International Affairs for Defense, conveyed this intention to Iveco Defense Vehicles officials.

The announcement came during the Argentine Defense Minister Jorge Taiana’s visit to the combined military exercise Arandú, carried out by the Argentine and Brazilian armies.

Although the Brazilian Army brought several Guaraní units to the exercise, inquiries were made since Taiana had previously hinted at a potential acquisition.

Taiana confirmed that financing issues were being resolved, with strong goodwill from the Brazilian government, and that the purchase would be successful.

The plan involves incorporating 156 units, including various types of combat and command vehicles.

A letter of intent was signed in January between Jorge Taiana and the Brazilian Chancellor, Mauro Vieira, to propel negotiations on the Guaraní.

The agreement also includes technology transfer for the gradual increase of parts manufacturing in Argentina and logistical support.

One Guaraní vehicle was sent to Argentina in 2021 for technical and operational tests, and to assess its aero-transportation capabilities in a Hercules C-130H.

Contradicting certain media reports questioning the acquisition’s financing, Argentine authorities and Iveco representatives have confirmed that the deal is proceeding without hindrance.

The Argentine Army has regarded the Guaraní as the most convenient option among different vehicles considered, considering various aspects of a large purchase.
