US climate envoy John Kerry says the Amazon belongs to humanity
The United States special envoy for climate, John Kerry, met with the Minister of Environment, Marina Silva, on Wednesday (28) and said that the Amazon is an extraordinary treasure that belongs to everyone.
His visit to Brazil marks a narrowing of “environmental agendas” between the Brazilian and the American governments.
On the other hand, the opposition fears that Lula’s government is collaborating with an international articulation to deny Brazil the possibility of developing the Amazon sustainably.

“The Amazon is a test for all humanity,” said the American.
He said his meeting with Marina shows the renewal of the commitment to preserve “this extraordinary treasure that belongs to all.”
Responding to Kerry, Marina said Lula is committed to zero deforestation in the region by 2030.
However, she affirmed that the Amazon belongs to Brazil.
“We understand the character that the Amazon has on the balance of the planet, but we have the clarity of sovereignty over this territory,” she said in an interview.
Kerry was next to her and nodded.
US AGENDA
The special envoy also gave another worrying statement.
He said that if the Amazon is not protected, “we will not be able to keep the temperature of the world this way”.
The Brazilian opposition fears that there will be a series of political, legal, and financial offensives – by countries like the US and France – to try to put a brake on Amazon’s development supposedly.
