Zelensky keeps Lula waiting and doesn’t show up for meeting, says Brazilian president

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Sunday (21) that the bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was scheduled but that the delegation from the European country was late and did not show up.

The meeting did not take place.

Lula made the statement during an interview with journalists in Hiroshima (Japan), around 8:00 am on Monday (22) local time.

Japan, home of the G7 summit, a group of seven of the world’s most industrialized countries, is 12 hours ahead of Brazil in the time zone.

“The fact is very simple. There was a bilateral interview with Ukraine here in this hall at 3:15 in the afternoon. We waited and then received information that they had been delayed.”

“Meanwhile, I attended to the president of Vietnam, and when the president [actually, the meeting was with the prime minister] of Vietnam left, Ukraine didn’t show up; they certainly had another appointment and couldn’t come here. That’s simply what happened,” Lula said.

However, the agenda with Lula’s appointments sent to journalists on Sunday morning shows that at 3:15 PM, the time cited by the president, a bilateral meeting was scheduled. With the Prime Minister of Vietnam, not Zelensky.

OLD ENOUGH

In an interview with journalists, Zelensky was asked if he was disappointed that the meeting did not occur.

The Ukrainian replied ironically: “I think he [Lula] was disappointed.” He said that there was an incompatibility of agendas between him and Lula.

“I wasn’t disappointed; I was upset because I wanted to meet with him,” the Brazilian said in an interview with journalists. “He is old enough; he knows what he is doing,” the Brazilian leftist said of the Ukrainian.

PLAN TO BUILD PEACE

Lula said he continues with the same position regarding the war in Ukraine: “I am trying, with other countries, like India, like China, with Indonesia and other countries, to build a block to build a peace policy in the world. The world doesn’t need war; it needs peace.

For the Brazilian, the end of the war will only be possible in a peaceful way when Russia and Ukraine are willing to talk, and not Brazil or China. He also stated that “there will be no lack of opportunities” to meet with Zelensky.
