EU and CELAC start summit trying to find a common language

The European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) are commencing a two-day summit without having reached a unified stance on the conflict in Ukraine.

CELAC’s acting President, Ralph Gonsalves, stressed the importance of finding a common language that includes everyone.

The EU strives to address this issue with the highest level of ambition possible, while acknowledging the divergent perspectives among CELAC nations.

Voting patterns in the United Nations General Assembly concerning the Ukrainian war have varied, with some Latin American and Caribbean countries abstaining or voting against condemnation of the conflict.

Furthermore, Gonsalves declined to specify what the summit’s declaration will entail regarding the trade agreement between the EU and Mercosur, considering it an internal matter.

Gonsalves has also urged that the summit’s document acknowledges the need for dialogue on colonialism’s historical legacy.

Today marks the start of the EU-CELAC summit, where meetings will be held with various Latin American leaders.
