Brazil’s São Paulo state witnesses job growth with 55,000 new positions in April

A study conducted by Fundação Seade has revealed a 0.4% increase in formal employment in São Paulo state for April 2023, compared to the previous month.

This Brazilian state is wealthier than Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia combined.

This growth translates to the creation of 55,000 new job positions. In the span of the first four months of the year, São Paulo saw the creation of 190,000 jobs, as reported by Caged (General Cadastre for Employed and Unemployed).

A major industrial complex, the state has 21.9% of the Brazilian population and is responsible for 33.9% of Brazil’s GDP.

São Paulo also has the second-highest Human Development Index (HDI) and GDP per capita, the fourth-lowest infant mortality rate, the third-highest life expectancy, and the third-lowest illiteracy rate among Brazil’s federative units

São Paulo is also the world’s twenty-eighth-most populous sub-national entity and the most populous sub-national entity in the Americas.

Positive job growth was recorded across multiple sectors, including agriculture (1.1%), construction (0.9%), services (0.4%), industry (0.4%), and commerce (0.3%).

In absolute terms, the distribution was as follows: agriculture, livestock, and fishing (3,716); industry (9,339); construction (6,686); commerce (7,425); and services (27,744).

Notably, transport, storage, and mail (8,000) and human health and social services (6,000) in the services sector witnessed significant job increases.

Regarding geographical regions, the capital city of São Paulo led with a net employment gain of 12,310 jobs.

This was followed by Campinas (11,585), the metropolitan region of the capital (8,222), Sorocaba (4,394), Bauru (3,700), and São José dos Campos (2,944).
