The Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA), used to calculate Brazil’s official inflation, slowed down in May to 0.23%, below the 0.61% registered in April, according to IBGE data released on Wednesday (7).
With this, the index accumulated 2.95% this year and 3.94% in the accumulated 12 months.
According to IBGE, the largest drops occurred in the transport (-0.57%) and household items (-0.23%) groups, while the food group was positive by 0.16% against 0.71% in April.
“This is the group with the greatest weight in the index, which influences the overall result,” explains AndrĂ© Almada, research analyst.

The health and housing groups increased by 0.93% and 0.67% in the month.
The IBGE also announced that the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) rose 0.23%, below the 0.53% registered in April.
The year-to-date figure is 2.79% and 3.74% for the last 12 months.
