Brazil’s Economy Minister says minimum wage will rise above inflation

On Wednesday, October 26, the Minister of Economy, Paulo Guedes, said the minimum wage, pensions, and the remuneration of civil servants will be adjusted above inflation in 2023.

The real wage increase is a promise from Jair Bolsonaro (Liberal Party – PL, right) to match Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (Workers’ Party – PT, left) in the race for the Presidency of the Republic.

In an event with business people in Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais), Guedes again denied that studies of the Ministry of Economy contrary to the adjustment for inflation have his approval.

“If we gave increases for minimum wage, for pensions and benefits during the tragedy and the war, now that the pandemic is gone, we would give an increase above inflation,” he said.

Currently, the minimum wage is R$1,212 (US$226). In the budget of the Bolsonaro government, the value provided for next year is R$1,302.

Economists consulted by the Focus Bulletin evaluate that inflation this year will close at 5.6%.
