Brazil: left-wing protesters close Paulista Avenue for the second time this week
Students, teachers, and leftist social movements protested against the new rules for high school and defended the adjustment of the national salary floor for teachers.
The acts were concentrated in front of the São Paulo Museum of Art (Masp), on Avenida Paulista, on Wednesday afternoon, 22.
This is the second mobilization of students against the high school reform.
The first one, organized by the Brazilian Union of Secondary Students (Ubes), was held on March 15.
The reform expands the minimum workload of high school and makes only Portuguese and mathematics compulsory.
The proposal makes optional subjects like art, physical education, English, and Spanish.
The protesters claim that there is a big difference between what is proposed and what has occurred in schools.
They also say that the reform represents a “step back” in the education of students.
PROTESTS AGAINST THE CENTRAL BANK
Leftist militants set fire to a dummy of the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, during a protest on Avenida Paulista.
The act occurred on the morning of Tuesday, 21 and was attended by social movements and trade unions.
The group claims that the basic interest rate, at 13.75% a year, hinders the development of the economy and the generation of jobs.
The activists say that only the financial sector benefits from this measure.
During the demonstration, the leftists barbecued sardines.
The animal would be a metaphor for the poorest people, devoured by the sharks (wealthy people).
