Brazil: Bolsonaro leaves hospital after overnighter due to abdominal discomfort

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – President Jair Bolsonaro left the Armed Forces Hospital in Brasilia on Tuesday morning after being hospitalized overnight for medical tests due to abdominal discomfort, the Presidential Palace said.

Bolsonaro had been hospitalized on Monday night, March 28, after feeling unwell. The president did not attend an affiliation event for Ministers Tarcísio de Freitas (Infrastructure) and Damares Alves (Women, Family, and Human Rights) to the Republicanos party.

Bolsonaro, who was stabbed in the abdomen during the 2018 election campaign, was hospitalized in January of this year with intestinal obstruction but did not need to undergo surgery.

In July 2021, after 11 days of uninterrupted bouts of hiccups, the president was admitted to the Armed Forces Hospital with severe abdominal pain. He was then transferred to São Paulo, where he was found to have an intestinal obstruction. At the time, the medical team considered the need for surgery, but after a week of hospitalization, the four were resolved with medication.

Since he suffered a knife attack, the president has already undergone six surgeries, four directly related to the stabbing. One was due to an intestinal adhesion days after the stabbing, another to remove the colostomy bag, and a third to correct a hernia that appeared in the scar site of the first surgery.
