Brazil and Russia share unique views on Eastern Europe, says Russian Foreign Minister

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday (17) that Brazil and Russia have “unique views regarding the events” in Eastern Europe.
The statement was made after a meeting with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira in Brasília.
Lavrov stressed that Brazil and Russia seek a more just world order based on law, with “a multipolar vision of the world” that considers several countries, not only a few.

Lavrov also echoed former President Lula’s speech, saying that Western countries are interested in maintaining the war in Ukraine with financial and political support.
“There is a hard fight, and our colleagues in the West want to maintain financial and political positions.”
“This has motivated the situation we have today, including NATO, the European community, and Ukraine,” Lavrov said.
Lavrov thanked Brazil for its contribution to resolving the conflict and reaffirmed Russia’s support for Brazil’s candidacy for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
“There is constructive cooperation between our countries based on equality, respect, and not depending on changes in the world situation,” he added.
In turn, the Brazilian Foreign Minister, Mauro Vieira, criticized the application of unilateral sanctions and expressed Brazil’s willingness to contribute to a peaceful solution to the conflict by helping mediate between Russia and Ukraine.
“I renewed Brazil’s willingness to contribute to a peaceful solution to the conflict and facilitate forming a group of friendly countries to mediate negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.”
“Brazil is against the application of unilateral sanctions because the UN Security Council has not approved them,” Vieira said.
